At the request of the National Science Foundation, National Academy of Engineering (NAE) convened a committee of leading technical thinkers to create a list of the grand challenges and opportunities for engineering facing those born at the dawn of this new century. In 2008, the NAE released its grand challenges (see NAE Grand Challenges in Engineering).  Since then, more than 120 U.S. engineering schools have announced plans to educate a new generation of engineers to tackle those challenges.
