As part of their information gathering efforts, the committee on Safeguarding the Bioeconomy is hosting a public webinar to discuss the issues surrounding data protection versus open access. In this webinar, the committee will hear presentations on the importance of safeguarding biological data as well as the benefits of data sharing and open science. Finding and understanding the balance between adequately protecting investments in research efforts that lead to the collection and aggregation of large biological datasets and the potential for faster and more innovative advancements driven by an open science framework will require careful consideration and discussion. The invited speakers will each give a short presentation which will be followed by a Q&A with the committee. The speakers for this webinar are:

Alexa T. McCray– Professor of Medicine in the Department of Biomedical Informatics, Harvard Medical School

The digitization of the life sciences and increasing adoption of artificial intelligence to facilitate and accelerate data analyses and discoveries is opening up new opportunities for scientific advancement. However, these trends also raise new issues within the bioeconomy and new considerations for how to assess its value.
