About ILAR

ILAR-OIE-CC-logo-lgILAR is a nationally and internationally recognized leader in developing science-based guidelines for responsible animal care and use. For more than 60 years, ILAR has provided independent, objective advice to the federal government, the biomedical research and lab animal medicine and science communities, and the public through expert reports, the ILAR Journal, and web-based resources. ILAR’s Guide for the Care and Use of Laboratory Animals, with more than 500,000 copies sold, is an internationally accepted primary reference on animal care for the scientific community. The Guide and other ILAR publications help biomedical researchers, veterinarians, and institutional animal care and use committees (IACUCs) fulfill the requirements of the Animal Welfare Act and other policies.

ILAR is a Collaborating Centre for Laboratory Animal Welfare Science by the World Organization for Animal Health (OIE). OIE is an intergovernmental organization responsible for improving animal health worldwide. Its global network of Collaborating Centres and Reference Laboratories provides expertise internationally in specific spheres of competence relating to issues of animal health. ILAR’s reputation as an authoritative source of information and expertise on lab animal medicine, science, and welfare is enhanced.
