Watch committee chair, Richard Murray, discuss the report’s three main messages

Welcome to the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine study examining the future products of biotechnology. Rapid scientific advances are expanding the types of products that can be generated through biotechnology. A committee of experts was asked to identify the kinds of products that may be produced with biotechnology in the next 10 years. The U.S. regulatory system for biotechnology products was originally designed in the 1980s, so the committee was asked to provide advice on the scientific capabilities, tools, and expertise that may be necessary to regulate those forthcoming products.

This study is sponsored by the US Environmental Protection Agency, US Department of Agriculture, and the US Food and Drug Administration. The prepublication of the report was released on March 9, 2017.
